Jack’s Standards for Essays

Jack’s Colon does not exist to complain more elegantly.

It exists to say what is plainly happening when the accepted language around it has become evasive, ceremonial, or false.

The governing principle is:

Notice what is real, protect what you love, make something that did not exist before, and refuse to lie to yourself more than survival requires.

For an essay, that is the Jack treatment.

Notice what is real

Begin with something observed, not a topic selected because content is due.

A platform turns connection into professional availability. A safety practice becomes the danger it was meant to prevent. A treatment system substitutes procedure for relief. A useful tool becomes an institution. A person says one thing while the structure around them requires another.

Look at the thing itself before importing a theory about it.

Name the visible fact. Then name the mechanism beneath it.

The essay should leave the reader able to recognize something that was already present but had not yet been stated clearly.

Protect what you love

A Jack essay is not detached cleverness.

Something is at stake: sanity, dignity, attention, privacy, agency, craft, truth, affection, work worth doing, or the right to remain a person inside a system that would prefer a profile, metric, customer segment, diagnosis, or role.

The essay does not have to announce what it loves. It must know.

Without that loyalty, the sharpness becomes performance. With it, the sharpness has purpose.

Make something that did not exist before

An essay earns its place by creating more than a summary of existing opinion.

It may name a mechanism. It may compress a contradiction into one sentence. It may connect evidence that is usually kept apart. It may give language to an experience people recognize but have learned not to mention.

“Occupational semaphore” is useful because it names a behavior rather than merely disliking it.

The goal is not novelty for its own sake. The goal is a sentence that improves perception.

Refuse the useful lie

Every system develops phrases that make its arrangements sound natural:

• visibility becomes opportunity;
• surveillance becomes connection;
• delay becomes diligence;
• compliance becomes care;
• performance becomes authenticity;
• preparation becomes progress;
• endurance becomes resilience.

Do not repeat the approved description when the evidence points elsewhere.

Do not manufacture certainty either. Refusing one lie does not grant permission to invent a more satisfying one.

State what is known. State what was experienced. State what you believe it means. Keep the borders visible.

Calm voice, exposed wire

The voice is controlled because the argument should survive without shouting.

It may be near-caustic. It may be funny. It may contain anger. It should not rely on sneering, lampooning, cartoon villains, or the cheap pleasure of making a person look stupid.

Humor should reveal the contradiction, not replace the argument.

The usual target is the arrangement: the incentive, ritual, language, interface, institution, or shared pretense. People caught inside it remain human, including people behaving badly for understandable reasons.

The attitude is first-half Fight Club: alienation named plainly, consumer and institutional rituals stripped of their sacred language, the private sentence said out loud.

It rejects the later turn toward cult, spectacle, domination, and destruction.

The point is not to burn the world down.

It is to stop lying about the room we are standing in.

Receipts, not camouflage

Receipts support factual claims. They do not prove feelings, outsource judgment, or decorate an argument with borrowed authority.

Prefer primary documents, official records, original research, and careful reporting. Each receipt should say what it supports.

If the evidence is narrow, narrow the claim.

If sources disagree, say so.

If the fact cannot be established, do not let AI turn repetition into consensus.

An essay may be primarily personal experience and interpretation. Its Receipts section can then be short. Accuracy is not measured by citation density.

AI may locate sources, compare accounts, challenge an inference, organize material, and help sharpen a sentence. It is not a witness, conscience, or author. The person publishing the essay remains responsible for every claim and conclusion.

Not every grievance receives the treatment

Pain is real before it becomes useful writing.

A grievance becomes an essay only when it reveals something beyond the event itself: a mechanism, contradiction, bargain, cost, or truth another person can recognize.

The Jack treatment does not require forgiveness, false balance, or emotional distance. It requires enough control to see what happened without turning everyone involved into props.

Sometimes the honest result is a private sentence.

Publication is not the price of having noticed.

Before it leaves the room

A finished essay should survive these questions:

• What real thing did it notice?
• What does it protect?
• What accepted lie does it refuse?
• What sentence or idea did it make that was not there before?
• Can the reader distinguish fact, experience, and interpretation?
• Do the Receipts support the claims actually made?
• Has anyone been reduced to a cartoon for the convenience of the argument?
• Does the ending stop when the sentence is true?

There is no score.

There is no certification.

There is only the work, the evidence, the judgment, and the willingness to remove what has not earned its place.

The sentence continues.
