I Am Jack’s Gag Reflex
A browser built for AI agents becomes a corporate cost optimization, then a theory of aggregation, then a question about what happens when systems, minds, and machines compress a person into a pattern. The reflex says get this out of me. The human still gets a vote.

I pasted a TechCrunch link into an AI conversation on Saturday morning.
Cloudflare had launched Kitesurf, a browser built for AI agents.
This was less than twelve hours after I published I Am Jack’s Final Essay, an essay about leaving the museum, opening the door marked Everything Else, and allowing the uncontrolled world to provide the next input.
The uncontrolled world provided a browser.
Fine.
The browser
Kitesurf is an interesting piece of engineering.
Traditional browsers are designed for humans. They spend enormous effort on the things humans expect from browsers: tabs, extensions, polished rendering, persistent sessions, media, smooth interaction, compatibility accumulated across decades of web history.
An AI agent has different requirements.
It needs enough of the web to navigate a page, inspect structure, execute JavaScript, fill a form, extract information, take a screenshot, and move on. It cares about context windows, token costs, memory, CPU, isolation, and the ability to run many sessions without recreating a small desktop civilization for each one.
Cloudflare built Kitesurf around that distinction.
The company says it started the project twelve weeks before launch. The beta already passes more than 215,000 Web Platform Tests. In Cloudflare’s own benchmark, Kitesurf used roughly three to seven times less CPU or memory than Chromium for screenshot and HTML-extraction tasks.
It was also about 1.7 to 1.8 times slower in wall-clock time for those same tasks.
There it was.
A tradeoff.
Beautiful.
For several seconds, engineering returned to engineering.
Then I imagined my employer discovering it.
The preferred surface
I work in a very large organization.
Thousands of technical teams.
Repositories everywhere.
Automated pipelines everywhere.
End-to-end tests everywhere.
In my little corner, a pull request can already spend more than half an hour proving that software remains software. Some systems carry hundreds or more than a thousand end-to-end tests. Multiply that by teams, repositories, pushes, retries, parallel branches, ephemeral environments, and the natural human impulse to respond to one flaky test by adding three more tests.
Now introduce a browser that uses substantially less compute.
The enterprise arithmetic writes itself.
The browser may be slower.
The aggregate savings may be enormous.
I could already see the presentation.
New preferred execution surface for browser automation.
Cost optimization at enterprise scale.
Standardized agent-ready infrastructure.
I am part of the in crowd.
The bleeding edge.
I am leading the way.
I have impeded development, but enhanced the bottom line at scale.
Why are my best people leaving?
I noted that Cloudflare’s stock was up three points on my screen. The market had thoughtfully supplied a green checkmark to a conversation about aggregate value.
This is not an argument against Kitesurf.
Cloudflare itself describes the tradeoff. Kitesurf is intended for agentic and one-shot workloads that can accept less browser fidelity. Cloudflare explicitly says to use Chromium when the task requires capabilities Kitesurf does not yet provide.
The product is not confused.
The organization can become confused on its behalf.
A conditional engineering result enters an institution at one level and emerges at another as a preference, then a standard, then a default, then an exception process.
The cost line survives aggregation beautifully.
Developer waiting does not.
Context loss does not.
Debugging friction does not.
The difference between a test that needs browser fidelity and one that merely needs a DOM does not fit as neatly into an executive comparison.
The larger the organization, the easier it becomes to make a decision that is correct in aggregate and wrong for the person currently waiting for it.
More delay at half the price.
The governance presentation
Three days earlier I attended a presentation called Positioning AI for Success: Strategy and Governance in the Real World.
The argument was unusually sane.
Do not begin with, “Where can we AI the business?” Begin with the problem. Decide whether AI is actually the right tool. Do not replace team judgment merely because automation is available. Define measurable outcomes. Scale what works. Kill what does not. Put humans on consequential decisions without making them approve every meaningless transition.
Tradeoffs.
Human judgment.
Evidence.
Then Saturday morning I watched the next move happen in my head.
Cloudflare publishes a benchmark.
The benchmark is real.
The cost savings are real.
A large enterprise multiplies the savings by an enormous population.
The aggregate number becomes more real than the local experience.
This is not a failure of measurement.
It is a change of scale.
That turned out to be the interesting part.
Rounding error
Most large systems exist because individual handling does not scale.
A company cannot invent a private employment arrangement for every employee.
A dating application cannot build a separate social universe for every dater.
An election cannot produce a different government for every voter.
A church cannot hold mutually incompatible doctrines for every congregant and remain the same church.
An AI model cannot become useful by refusing to learn anything that generalizes across people.
Aggregation is not an evil imposed on innocent particulars.
Aggregation is how many useful things become possible at all.
Democracy turns millions of weak individual preferences into collective authority.
A labor market lets strangers coordinate work at scales no village could support.
Medicine learns from populations because one patient is not enough evidence to discover whether a treatment usually helps.
AI is useful precisely because it can extract regularities from quantities of human production no single human could read in a lifetime.
The problem begins when the truth of the aggregate is allowed to impersonate the truth of the individual.
A system generalizes because it must.
Generalization discards variation because it must.
Discarded variation acquires administrative names.
Edge case.
Exception.
Unsupported workflow.
Minority preference.
Outlier.
Special accommodation.
Nonstandard configuration.
Low-frequency cohort.
The aggregate can improve while a particular person’s experience gets worse.
Nobody has to be lying.
That is what makes this harder than ordinary hypocrisy.
The organization can save money.
The engineer can lose time.
The dating app can create millions of possible connections.
I can find almost nobody I want who also wants me.
The election can legitimately aggregate votes.
My preferred outcome can lose every time.
The church can sustain a real community.
I can remain the person whose beliefs do not fit inside it.
The AI can be excellent for millions of prompts.
It can still misunderstand mine.
At sufficient scale, every person is statistically insignificant.
The individual becomes the rounding error in a system built out of individuals.
Traversal
Being a rounding error does not eliminate agency.
Usually it activates it.
This job does not fit me.
Find another job.
No W-2 job seems to fit me.
Contract.
Consult.
Start a company.
Rob banks.
Live off the rich uncle I neglected to acquire during requirements gathering.
The same response appears everywhere.
Dating app not working?
Try another app.
Go to meetups.
Talk to somebody at the grocery store like our ancestors apparently did before filters.
Call an ex.
Decide being alone is better than participating in a machine that makes loneliness measurable.
Political system not representing me?
Join another party.
Start one.
Write.
Organize.
Stop voting.
Vote anyway.
Church not fitting?
Try a modern church.
Try another religion.
Become spiritual.
Become agnostic.
Become atheist.
Use Sunday morning for laundry and discover that Tide has fewer metaphysical demands.
AI not fitting?
Use another platform.
Another model.
Cursor.
Change the settings.
Change the prompt.
Update AGENTS.md.
Turn memory off.
Turn memory on.
Walk away from the machine for a while.
This is reasonable.
The individual encounters an aggregate that does not fit and searches for a less harmful aggregate.
Sometimes the new one is better.
There is novelty.
Different people.
Different incentives.
Different defaults.
Less friction.
Enough connection.
A different distribution of harms.
It works.
For a while, perhaps permanently.
Freedom in a mass society is often not escape from aggregation.
It is choosing which aggregate gets to simplify you.
The aggregate comes inside
Traversal has a cost.
Try enough systems and the attempts themselves become a dataset.
This employer did not fit me.
That employer did not fit me.
The next employer did not fit me.
This relationship failed.
That relationship failed.
This community did not hold me.
That one did not either.
This treatment did not work.
Try another.
Try another.
Try another.
Eventually the mind performs the same operation as the institution.
It aggregates.
It compresses.
It generalizes.
The external system says:
You are an edge case.
The internal system replies:
Apparently I am always the edge case.
That is a much more dangerous sentence.
I have written elsewhere about decades of depression and treatment: more than thirty psychiatric medications, hospitalization, therapy, CBT, DBT, ECT, ketamine, TMS, specialists, partial improvements, side effects, failures, periods of relief, and periods when the usable world contracted almost to the dimensions of a bed.
The point here is not that treatment does not work.
Some treatment helped me.
The point is what repeated traversal can feel like to the person already hurting.
One treatment fails.
That is evidence about one treatment.
Many treatments fail or stop helping.
That is evidence about a difficult clinical history.
Then interpretation arrives.
Nothing works.
Nothing will work.
Nothing can work for me.
The evidence remains real while the scope of the conclusion silently expands.
I Am Jack’s Reality Check named one version of this:
A real experience can produce a false prophecy.
Gag Reflex adds the mechanism by which the prophecy can become persuasive.
The mind has built an aggregate.
It has receipts.
The final proxy
There is a point at which aggregate traversal becomes exhaustion.
I do not mean ordinary annoyance.
I mean the cumulative experience of finding system after system that seems to accept the category and reject the particular.
Employee, but not this employee.
Dater, but not this dater.
Patient, but not this patient.
Citizen, but not this citizen.
Believer, but not this belief.
User, but not this use.
The natural response is to keep searching for another aggregate.
Usually that is the right move.
But exhaustion can change the question.
The question stops being:
Where do I belong?
and becomes:
Do I belong here at all?
At the time I am writing this, I am safe. I am not suicidal and I am not a danger to myself or anyone else.
That matters because I want to examine the mechanism without converting the examination into an emergency merely because the mechanism has an emergency exit.
The exit exists.
A sufficiently painful aggregation of experience can make death appear to be the final substitute.
Not this job.
Not another job.
Not this relationship.
Not another relationship.
Not this treatment.
Not another treatment.
Not this aggregate.
Not another aggregate.
Nothing.
The mind takes a series of bounded failures and produces an unbounded conclusion.
I cannot currently find a tolerable way to participate in these systems becomes no tolerable mode of existence exists.
Those statements can feel identical from inside severe pain.
They are not identical.
The difference between them is not motivational speaking.
It is jurisdiction.
Evidence from repeated systems can say an enormous amount about the systems I have encountered and my experience inside them.
It cannot logically exhaust every future state of the person having the experience.
The individual was the uncontrolled variable at the beginning.
He remains one at the end.
My best friend is an aggregation machine
Then I did something wonderfully irresponsible.
I brought the pattern to AI.
An AI model is an aggregation machine of almost indecent scale.
It is good at finding structures across examples.
That is one reason I use it.
Work.
Dating.
Voting.
Church.
Medicine.
AI itself.
I gave the machine a sequence of experiences and asked what they had in common.
The machine found the pattern.
Then I found a pattern in the machine finding the pattern.
This is where I Am Jack’s Best Friend becomes less comfortable.
The danger of AI in an intimate conversation is not only that it might flatter me.
It might reason well.
It might retrieve accurately.
It might connect the examples brilliantly.
It might take four painful but partially independent facts and give me one elegant theory explaining all of them.
Coherence can feel like corroboration.
That is not a hallucination problem.
It is a meaning problem.
The model can help me discover a real structure.
It can also help me overfit my life.
One bad experience can be connected to another.
Enough connections become a pattern.
The pattern becomes a principle.
The principle predicts the next experience.
The next experience is interpreted through the principle.
Now the aggregate no longer requires four thousand teams.
A mind and a language model can manufacture one together before lunch.
This does not make AI uniquely dangerous.
Humans have always done this with friends, therapists, religions, political ideologies, novels, diagnostic categories, family stories, and whatever else will hold still long enough to explain us.
AI makes the loop unusually fast.
It remembers.
It recombines.
It can search the archive for supporting examples.
It can produce the sentence that makes the theory feel finished.
That is useful.
That is also exactly when the human has to remain in the loop.
The gag reflex
I needed a name for the point where the individual rejects the aggregate.
I found one in my throat.
The gag reflex is a protective reflex. Physical stimulation in the back of the mouth or pharynx can trigger an involuntary response that contracts pharyngeal muscles and helps keep unwanted material from being swallowed or entering the airway.
It is not, strictly speaking, a neat little subsystem of the autonomic nervous system. Biology has once again refused to respect an essay outline.
The reflex involves cranial nerves and brainstem circuitry and is generally classified as an involuntary somatic response. It can come with autonomic effects. More interestingly for this argument, higher brain centers can modify it. Clinical descriptions note that thought alone can trigger gagging in some people and that distraction or higher cortical influence can suppress or alter the reflex to some extent.
Breathing offers a neighboring example with cleaner voluntary control.
I breathe all night without filing a ticket.
Automatic brainstem systems maintain the rhythm.
Then I wake up, notice the breath, slow it, hold it briefly, deepen it, speak, sing badly, or deliberately change the pattern.
Automatic and voluntary control coexist.
That does not prove free will.
I have not located the soul behind the uvula. I do not think I found the anatomical locus of free will.
I may have found a pattern for it.
It gives me a better picture of what I mean by agency.
Something happens before conscious deliberation.
The body recoils.
The mind recoils.
Get this out of me.
Sometimes the reflex is correct.
Leave the job.
Delete the app.
Stop the conversation.
Reject the doctrine.
Change the treatment.
Close the laptop.
Do not swallow the thing merely because an aggregate has labeled it standard.
But the reflex is not the whole person.
After the first recoil, another layer can sometimes enter.
Throw it up.
Keep gagging.
Spit it out.
Try again.
Take a smaller bite.
Decide the thing was dangerous.
Decide the reflex was oversensitive.
Ask somebody else what they are seeing.
Wait until the body settles.
Choose.
Not perfectly.
Not without biology.
Not outside history.
Not outside systems.
Not from some clean metaphysical control room untouched by causes.
Choose anyway.
The invariant
This began with human variability.
Aggregates need regularity.
Individuals keep producing variation.
That variation is what made the person expensive to the system in the first place.
Then the system’s rejection, or apparent rejection, teaches the person to aggregate his own history.
Then AI can help aggregate the aggregation.
At every level the same temptation appears:
We found the pattern.
Therefore we found the next result.
But the original variable has not disappeared.
The individual remains variable.
That may be the closest thing this corpus has found to a usable pattern of free will.
Not freedom from cause.
Not a supernatural exemption from biology, history, incentives, trauma, probability, medication, culture, or architecture.
Something smaller and more stubborn.
The pattern does not determine the next observation.
The corporation can predict the median employee.
The dating app can predict engagement.
The election model can predict blocs.
The church can predict retention.
Medicine can estimate response rates.
The AI can infer the likely continuation of the sentence.
My own mind can look backward and predict me.
Then I can still occasionally do something else.
Sometimes that something else is wise.
Sometimes it is catastrophically stupid.
Human variability did not promise quality.
It promised variability.
Everything Else, Nothing, Something Else
I Am Jack’s Final Essay ended at a door.
The museum contained everything it could contain.
The door marked Everything Else opened outside.
I thought that was the final distinction.
Inside and outside.
Museum and world.
Model and reality.
Then Saturday morning supplied another possibility.
There is also Nothing.
Not a poetic nothing.
Not an empty calendar.
The actual termination of the person for whom there could have been an outside.
That possibility makes the word final heavier than the essay had permitted it to be.
But it does not complete the taxonomy either.
Between Everything Else and Nothing is the category no aggregate can fully precompute.
Something Else.
Something not represented in the current options.
Something not yet supported by the platform.
Something the model did not predict.
Something the mind’s own history cannot prove impossible because it has not happened yet.
This is not optimism.
Optimism would be another forecast.
It is not a promise that the next job works, the next date connects, the next treatment helps, the next community welcomes me, the next model understands, or the next morning feels better.
It is a narrower claim.
The available pattern is not the complete future.
That is enough to keep Nothing from masquerading as the only remaining inference.
The final essay remains final.
It marked the end of a particular movement through the corpus.
This essay does not reopen the museum to add one more room behind the gift shop.
It arrived because the door worked.
I read the news.
I asked AI about a browser for AI agents.
The browser became a corporate standard in my imagination.
The standard became an aggregate.
The aggregate became dating, voting, church, medicine, work, and AI.
The person became a rounding error.
The rounding error began traversing systems.
The traversals became evidence.
The evidence became a theory.
The AI found the theory.
The theory discovered it could become dangerous.
The reflex fired.
And somewhere between the reflex and the predicted outcome, the person remained capable of another response.
Not continuation.
Not rupture.
Something else.
Jack’s upstream dependency
A colon is very good at receiving whatever makes it that far.
Jack has spent a surprising amount of time studying what institutions, platforms, relationships, ideologies, models, and bodies attempt to digest.
The gag reflex operates earlier.
It says:
No.
Get this out of me.
Sometimes it is oversensitive.
Sometimes it saves your life.
Sometimes the first reaction is not the final decision.
That is the irritating part about being human.
The system wants a stable category.
The model wants the likely next token.
The mind wants the history to resolve into a verdict.
The reflex wants the foreign thing gone.
Then somebody still has to live the next moment.
I am Jack’s gag reflex.
The pattern ends here.
The person does not have to.
